We Guarantee Al Gore Will Be Attacked Next Week. We Absolutely Guarantee It.

By Dave Johnson and James Boyce of Smoking Politics

All too often, Democrats are swiftboated, ozoned, attacked and smeared and after the attacks happen, sometimes they respond - sometimes they don't.

We have had enough.

Here's what we know and here's what we're going to do about it.

On Monday, Al Gore has a new book coming out next week, titled, "The Assault On Reason".

Because he is standing up, telling the truth and because he simply is a Democrat and Progressive leader, Al Gore will be smeared mercilessly by the right-wing smear machine. He will be ridiculed, made fun of and mocked. They will tease and make fun of him.

They will rush to say that he is bitter about 2000, crazy, insane, pontificating and out of touch.

They will bring up his utility bills and the boards he is a member of. They will talk about his kiss with Tipper, her crusade against vulgar rap lyrics.

They will bring up his weight and the beard. And say it's all about 2008.

But what they will not do:

TALK ABOUT WHAT'S IN THE BOOK.

Why are we so sure?

Because this is the core of the Right Wing tobacco-driven strategy. You distract. You create doubt. You sell fear and mock those that are not cool.

You have to do this if you are them because you simply can't talk about the facts. Smoking kills - how are you going to sell that little fact? By ignoring the facts and selling smoking as 'Marlboro Country' clean healthy outdoor living. Right Wing programs and policies are not good for the average American. So how do you sell them? Same way. Ignore the facts. Instead, try to kill the messenger.

In this book, Al Gore is going to go straight up against the Right Wing smear and noise machine - the one that we have been writing about at Smoking Politics. And we know what that means.

Over at Amazon you'll find this description of Gore's upcoming book:

A visionary analysis of how the politics of fear, secrecy, cronyism, and blind faith has combined with the degradation of the public sphere to create an environment dangerously hostile to reason

... We live in an age when the thirty-second television spot is the most powerful force shaping the electorate's thinking, and America is in the hands of an administration less interested than any previous administration in sharing the truth with the citizenry. Related to this and of even greater concern is this administration's disinterest in the process by which the truth is ascertained, the tenets of fact-based reasoning-first among them an embrace of open inquiry in which unexpected and even inconvenient facts can lead to unexpected conclusions.

How did we get here? How much damage has been done to the functioning of our democracy and its role as steward of our security? Never has there been a worse time for us to lose the capacity to face the reality of our long-term challenges, from national security to the economy, from issues of health and social welfare to the environment. As The Assault on Reason shows us, we have precious little time to waste.

You stand up and say this, that's courage. Just like Al Gore was right about the Iraq War back in 2002 when Democratic Senators were falling all over themselves to vote FOR THE WAR, and Al Gore was against it.

So at Smoking Politics we are going to try to be ready in advance this time. Imagine that - not on the defensive, not surprised at the smear that shows up, not scrambling around trying to figure out what to do about it.

We're going to respond the minute the first attack shows up. We're going to be researching the apparatus that transmits the smear. We're going to explain the mechanism of the smear. We're going to expose those behind the smear. And we're going to launch a pushback against the smear, into the press.

At Smoking Politics we think that going into the 2008 election cycle - whoever the candidate is - nothing matters as much as this issue - the first thing we have to defeat is this Fear and $mear strategy that has been so effective at destroying our leaders and building up their own.

For the Democratic Party, the Progressive causes it supports and for the country, taking dead aim against the Right on this issue is critical to future success. A most important but often overlooked first step is just to be able to spread the news of the existence of this system and highlight how it impacts public debate. Some of the suggested tactics may seem basic and simplistic, but they are the building blocks we need to execute in order to stand up and defend ourselves, our candidates and our values.

While many feel that the Right's power and influence is diminished by the 2006 election, and that the Republican Party is waning, nothing is further from the truth and the stakes in the next election are extremely high.

Will the party and the leadership that ozoned Al Gore, race-baited John McCain, destroyed Max Cleland and swift-boated John Kerry lay down their arms and play nice? Absolutely not. Why would they?

The famous Chinese warrior Sun Tzu says:

Know thy self, know thy enemy. A thousand battles, a thousand victories.

Al Gore is ready to fight and he understands the battle and what's at stake.

We are at peace as you can only be when you know what you're fighting for.

Are you ready to stand up and fight with us?

Al Gore should run in o8...this country needs a man with clear integrity.......

These tactics remind me of another group, that does the same thing. The Cult of Scientology!

Daniel J Kalai:

AL Gore should Run. But first put forth a clear message for our country to get back to its basics. Disband the department of Home land security. put airport security with local police authority. Rebuild our armed Forces. reopen all closed armed bases in our country.Secure our borders and ports. And give back trade authority back to congress. we need to rebuild our country. in order to get back to basic

JR Huebinger:

Al is the Jimmy Swaggert of environmentalists. Read Crichton's State of Fear. Inconvenient Truth is a children's book written by a politician. Mike's is written by a Harvard Med school grad Dr. You decide.

letsbefrank:

Al Gore is not a leader, but an opportunist. Peaches all about global warning but flys to many of his mansions in private jets.

Folks all politicians are just that, politicians.

We need to clean house of all of them and start over.

Get real people to lead our country! Not people with silver spoons who are out of touch.

The first smear was posted here at 11:36. The next arrived 12 minutes later at 11:48. And those just smeared someone who predicted that smears would be on their way. I can't wait for the real things. Oh, maybe I can.

AMERICANS MUST WAKE UP AND STOP SENDING THE "USEFUL IDIOTS"TO WHITE HOUSE AS PRESIDENTS AND TO U.S. CONGRESS AND SENATE.
Now is the time for all young americans to reject voting the lesser evil-trend and adopt to elect or vote for INTELLLECTUALS who like to correct the evil forces spreading thru the "CULT OF INTELLIGENC AGENCIES",creating the huge "MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX",sponsored and cultivated by Israeli government's MAFIASO,which go where ever there is MONEY?!Use of "EMMOTIONAL BLACKMAIL OF AMERICAN INGONRANT JEWISH POPULATION as well populations around the world.Israeli Mafiaso is behind the ugly, evil forces of MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX which create covert clandestine wars, covert international terrorism, buying corrupt WAR LORDS,which let them commit covert terrorism by emmotional black mail of unwitting Muslim youths, who never know for whom they are hired or working for?
The jews and Muslims are in the same blackhole of EMMOTIONAL BLACKMAIL ,covertly driven by Mafiaso of Israeli origin and U.S. financed "MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX"
In U.S. Carter failed to solve ENERGY problem ,so to manipulate public and get away he created FIRST TIME ENERGY DEPARTMENT,then George Bush ,when faced international Terrorism, got away with establishing first time "HOMELAND SECURITY DEPARTMENT"?!Both doomed to be wasteful failures.
What is needed is REFORM AND DEMOLITIONS OGF "THE CULT OF INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES",which are good for nothing! And return to true and real DEMOCRACY and DR.AMEEN'S "consequential deplomacy" TO MAKE THE STRATEGIC POLICIES FOR GEOPOLITICS AND GLOBAL POLICIES.

Serge Bernyea:

The writer of this article is quite disillusioned. Is he upset because the Republicans have stolen the Democrats strategy of " being smeared mercilessly by the left-wing smear machine. He will be ridiculed, made fun of and mocked. They will tease and make fun of him."

Come on, the left invented the strategy of smearing.

Mark W.:

Al Gore is only out for Al Gore just like a lot of other politicians who are out to promote themselves, both republican and democrat.
Dr Syed Ameen (Ph.D.)...I don't know where you come from, but you sound like a terroriist who would like to see a weak president in office...Al Gore would be a weak president...if he was a strong person he would have put up a better fight in the 2000 election if he really felt he won.
The so called smear tactics work both way and should be stopped. The people of this country need to make those running for office stick to how they can better the country as a whole, not just special interest groups with money. The whole political system has become a joke and is only for those with LOTS of money to compete in. Our founding fathers are probably spinning in their grave with what the political system has become.
We need term limits desperately!!!

Steve:

Al Gore is full of shit. He is not qualified to be making judgements on the environmemnt, but George Bush is not qualified to be the president. All politicians are useless.

Curious:

Since when a filthy-rich politicians became a folk heroes?!?! Since when zillionaires need people's protection and support?! They feed us filth just so each one of them grabs more publicity, including "smear" publicity. Then they make more guzzilions out idiots who actually litens to them, believes IN them, and buys their filth.

SmokelessJim:

Wow - ridiculed, made fun of and mocked. They will tease and make fun of him.

Those fascist right-wing demogagues. Teasing Al Gore. Next stop - the gas chambers.

Grow up you left wing lunatics

CLIFFORD P. GIBSON:

I am a part of the right wing I guess. Since I do not believe in alot of the ideals of the left. But before you go making Al Gore a saint....each side uses smear campigns.....this is political America. Each side uses tactics to make the other look bad. Look at the elections. Its about making the other side look bad. We the American people are tired of all politicans. Its not just the Republicans the Democrats use the same systm.

Todd:

"JR Huebinger:
... Read Crichton's State of Fear. Inconvenient Truth is a children's book written by a politician. Mike's is written by a Harvard Med school grad Dr. You decide."

Or...

An Inconvenient Truth has to be simplified because most Americans don't pay attention in science class and Gore wanted to reach a wide audience without talking above their heads. Gore has been following the science of climate change for 30 years and has been writing books about it since before he was Vice President, let alone a Presidential candidate for 2008 or beyond. If *only* we had a candidate that would be crafty enough to write a book more than 15 years in advance to help his political chances. Gee, that would be horrible... (if it had a shred of truth to it).

Crichton has a medical degree but is best known for writing science fiction. The science behind his fiction is often suspect in the real world but fine for the story he's telling. I like his books, but he hasn't practiced medicine in decades and knows less about global science than I do. (I have a degree in Geology with a focus on marine science.)

In an interview I watched, Crichton claimed that environmental scientists weren't being rigorous about their analysis of facts (which is flatly wrong as the studies are peer reviewed) but instead going by their beliefs - which he then backed up with comments like "I don't think..." or "It seems to me..." without citing anything to back up his beliefs. That is, ironically, exactly what he was claiming the *scientists* were doing (but aren't).

In State of Fear, his (poor) analysis of the data at hand regarding climate change shows that he doesn't understand, literally, the way the world works.

You citing the fact that he is an MD as proof of climate expertise makes as much sense as going to an oceanographer to set a broken leg or perform an appendectomy.

Jon:

So you are going to smear the right wing because you think they are going to smear AL Gore.......hmmmmmmmmmm

How about a little less bias huh?

MSS:

A credible individual could refure everyhting Al Gore says item by item anf line by line showing facts to back up facts and they would be said to be smearing and they woud have their credibility lambasted by the 'mainstream' media as well as the left. They would all say that the person is smearing Al Gore. The left wing is relentless at trying to destroy anyone who has an opposing view while completely giving their own lackeys a pass for the same or similar acts. The author of this article assumes Al Gore is completely accurate on everything he says because of his political leanings. It's unortunate that there are so many people in this country on both sides of the politacal spectrum that will just rely on the word of one person instead of trying to make an informed decision.

Bob:

You had your chance to vote for him in 2000 and collectively you blew it. Then you blew it again 4 years later. You will blow it a third time in 2008. What makes you think that you can get it right next time?

kirk stubbeman:

There is one fact everyone overlooks regarding the election of 2000. Al Gore was sent to washington as a senator from the great state of tennessee. A politician should always be able to carry the state that he came from the one that he calls home the one state he hails from shouldnt he. In the election of 2000 GEORGE BUSH won the state of tennessee now the irony had Al Gore been able to win his home state of tennessee it wouldnt have mattered if every man woman and child had voted for George Bush in the great state of florida because of the electoral college Al Gore would have been president but you wont hear that one from any network or bitter democrat because it is well the truth. Maybe global warming had something to do with it too. NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Far left Wing:

Curious that Gore is held to a standard that others are not. Remember Bush could not even name several well know foreign leaders. I do not remember any swiftboaters attacking Bush. Besides this decussion should be on Gore's book which i bet all these commentors on how negative is Gore have not read the book but are quick to attack him. Hey i did not like Clinton BUT GUESS WHAT WE WERE A LOT BETTER OFF DURING HIS PRESIDENCY. Sure you can blow it off as a fluke but then why give others then create for things that happened during their presidency if it is always just luck. Did we go into Iraq by luck do the Saudies have so much influence over us by luck. It seems to me that this presidency only has feer to sell.

Bill Westfield:

Gee, now I know I'm an idiot... I just figure that I can't breath carbon monoxide, and I have to breath air. Why then would I *want* to put carbon monoxide into my air, or discredit somone who trys to stop *others* from putting it into my air? Al Gore may not be your folk hero, but at least he's doing *something.* I really think you all should stop trying to decide if global warming is or isn't a great problem (it's not even a question to the vast majority of people who are actually qualified to make that call, which you aren't), just keep thinking "only one place to get air, uh, well, maybe we should be a lot more careful about what we do to it."

In any case, the stuff we belch into the atmosphere may be responsible for a lot of cancers, or even worse (if that's too scientific for you), it may even smell bad.

Norburt Arthur Wellington Esq.:

AL GORE IS A GOD! HE SHOULD RULE THE EARTH! EVERY THING HE SAYS IS TRUE BECAUSE HE SAID IT!

hardrock:

It's funny the left has been on a smear campaign for the past two or three years, the lefts motto throw a bunch of bull out there some is bound to stick, I don,t believe one word that comes out of this guys mouth he has been a puppet and it's just another farleft smear tactic and it doesn't matter haw low you people will go to try and win the Whitehouse.

Joni Haynes:

Al Gore may not adhere to all the "cures" he touts for global warming......but that doesn't mean he is wrong about it. I probably wouldn't vote for him for president (I'm not looking for a one-issue president).....but I sure as heck listen to what he is saying.

S Lauer:

>

So what? Political parody has a long and honorable history in America, does it not?

In the past, when I have heard Limbaugh and others roast Al Gore, there has been plenty of substantial critique as well. I suspect if one listens closely, there will be debunking of the book as well as mocking of the man.

Trev:

Maybe one day Planet Earthlings will awaken from their long hypnotized sleep and realize just how they have been bamboozeld
over the decades.

The silly gangs they support called politicians
who claim to represent them.
The crazy system of each candidate for president using up maybe $50 million
to persuade sufficient people to place them in the seat of power.

Take a look at the web site 'ruletheworldhere' to see the sections on how to have peace honour honesty and most important of all how we can look after the 80% of the people on Earth

Those who have no shelter, a limb, insufficient funds to have enough food warm clothing education. Take a look I dare you.ruletheworldhere

Richard:

Al Gore for pres? You got to be kidding. The left has really sunk to the lowest state it has ever been. The left created the "we can't argue the issues so we will call everyone names." It's ironic the left believes Hitler had it right, tell a lie enough and pretty soon everyone believes it.

Hu Karez:

One thing that bugs me about Al Gore and all other supposed "environmentalists" is that they do not consider the impact beyond their years. Procreation beyond population replacement is irresponsible and is having a huge impact on the planet. In one century, we have gone from less than 1.9B to greater than 6B persons. Overfishing, drastic climate change and other issues are at our front door now and we still refuse to talk about the damage we do by creating more mouths to feed, clothe, etc. When are we as a species going to wake up and realize that if we don't voluntarily curtail growth, the earth will shake us off, like a bad case of fleas?

I look toward the future and I cringe.

Hu

Geo.:

Why is it the right does'nt see they are being lead around by the nose like a brainless animal by a dick tator and a nazi

Bill Westfield:

Well, yes, population control would be the best answer of all, reduce the population by about 2/3rds and many problems would dissapear, except for ignorance, sloth and war of course. Unfortunately, war is looked at by many as natures way of depopulating the planet, so more sane options aren't considered.

Rush Limbaugh, Michael Moore, Bill O'Reily, Ann Coulter, Jesse Jackson, Al Shapton; they're all in the same game. The will willingly misinform millions of people, swearing on their graves that they actually believe what they're saying, and all to make a buck off the indescriminate listener. They, as well as many of our politicians, should be charged with treason against their country and humanity at large. Even if you agree with some of their views, you can feel certain that they'd support the opposing view if it brought in more dollars.

"We The People" bitch about partizen politics when we feel we've been batterd by the other party, and wonder why the people involved can't just do the right thing, but when I look at this board, I understand why nothing ever gets done about it.

Jane:

I worked on the National Research and Education Initiative with Gore when he was a senator from Tennessee, and he is an excellent champion/advocate who appreciates and utilizes the talent of those around him to accomplish amazing things. He knows how to organize and inspire people.

Tragically, the anti-science stance of the current administration has been very destructive.

Gore is excellent at writing at a level that average people can understand. I think of him as a sort of techie organizer--and while I voted for him--I think he's actually better in his current role, drawing attention to important issues and bringing people together to solve them.

I think conscious population control is absolutely the most important thing we can do as people.

Sandbar 6:

Wow, the writer of the article is working hard to deflect criticism of IGOR, ahem, ALGORE. He even mentions such choice hypocracies as ALGORE's use of 10X the electricity of a normal household (thank goodness he's buying "carbon credits", ...from his own company, of course - as if it mattered where he was buying the phoney credits. The point is, he practices conspicuous consumption of electricity, but the rest of us are supposed to wring our hands, and eat cold sandwiches in the dark). As if inventing the Internet wasn't enough, now he's stepping up to save us from tobacco. Pull-ease!! Who cares what ALGORE says. He's irrelevant. (If any of you "Lib poison-koolaid-drinkers just can't help yourselves, enjoy letting AG get you excited. Remember, it's not the act of following ALGORE over the cliff that will change your lives, it's the shock of reality at the bottom of the cliff .

Roh:

Al Gore couldn't beat Frank Zappa, Dee Smart or John Denver in THAT congressional hearing to ban music with lyrics that were in bad taste. He forgot to check all the facts in that case which is why it fell flat on its arse. I'm therefore not suprised he failed to win a presidential election.

I guarentee that he hasn't checked all the facts on global warming too. The biggest inconsistency in the "facts" about global warming and the "projected" outcome in 50 to 100 years is that the models used are essentially those derived from modified weather forcasting. Another inconvenient truth.

Having delt with computer modeling in my engineering degree I can tell you they are only as good as the assumptions made in setting up the model. Garbage in, Garbage out

Climate change is inevitable with or without human intervention. The weather will never be the same tomorrow as it was today, nor will it ever be repeated.

Jeffrey:

Isn't it enough we are forced to hear that drabble out of Anne Colter's useless mouth? Are we now going to have to deal with a year and a half of the same idiots who voted GW into office defending their party as the moral party? If the republican party is moral, then we are all in big trouble!

Tim W:

In reality, Al Gore is not a leader. I think he is a good man. One leader I know of -- cyrrently running for Pres-- is Ron Paul; he says it like it is. Watch his debates. I am not a Rep or a Dem. Im Ind. This guy can turn things around.
I just pray he survives the run.
Another JFK.
Look into it & decide for yourself.

edromar:

Social movements promoted by corporate groups sometimes are behind the dumbing down of America.

A case in point is the gun and ammo guys behind the NRA who promote their taking a mistake about the meaning of the Second Amendment to the point of convincing the geat mass of ordinary folk that, as Alex Whit on MSNBC said the other day to the effect that, people all have a right to keep and use weapons.

It has become an article of faith in those who have been lied to so often they admit they have no idea what the caveat means or was intended to do in the saying that since a well regulated Militia is necessary to the security of a free state, some related right of "the people" shall not be infringed."

Most people have no idea how that amendment relates to the clauses it amends shich gives powers to Congress (in Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution) to create that well regulated Militia subject to the federal government to provide for the security of our new "free State."

When I wrote personally to a guy (whose letter to the editor of the local paper said that the Constitution could not have been passed without the 2nd Amendment in the Bill of Rights) that the Constitution had passed and the federal government was functioning before it could get the Constitution Amended, he wrote a second letter to the editor saying that us Pinko commie fascist liberals might as well not send him personal letters since he would not read them.

In a world where the ignorant are supported in their stupidity by institutions like MSNBC as well as the NRA to the point that they fear to even read or consider others opinions, we need to find a new way to get through.

In the example raised, I had written an explanation of the historical situation that had made that well regulated militia needed--and the first test of the use of it after the passage of the 2nd Amendment in the Whisky Rebellion that took place in our area in the early 1790s.

I pointed out the opinions and actions of Washington, Gouverneur Morris, Albert Gallatin and most federalist leaders who had just shepherded the Amendment through Congress and ratification. I showed that the Federalists saw no violation of the second amendment in the well regulated Militia called to federal service to disarm the local militias to provide for the security of their free state by supporting federal law, quelling insurrections or resisting invasions of "the people."

But the true believer who had concluded that the 2nd Amendment was there to threaten liberals in power not to enforce unpopular laws would not even read the opinions of those founding fathers--or of later historians and politicians such as Teddy Roosevelt and Henry Cabot Lodge whose biographies of those involved I had quoted liberally.

So how can we deal with such close mindedness. It seems that all children are being left behind in educational systems that fail to teach them to see through the self-serving propaganda of groups like the NRA serving the weapons manufacturers.

Does anyone have any novel ideas? I tried to send a message to Alex Whit at MSNBC, but could find no way to get a message to her, to help her learn to question the received nonsense she spouted.

Malc:

Well, I don't know if you're smoking politics, but you're sure smoking something. You are so out of touch with reality the old saying applies..."You can't argue with a sick mind". But I will say it's time to grow up.

joeganim:

Americans should send a strong message of dissatisfaction with the political process in this country by boycoting the election altogther and NOT voting. The argument that this is the system we have and we should make the best of it no longer hoplds water. Don:

The problem with Gore, as with all left-wing crazies, is his hypocrisy. He says one thing and does another. His idea of solving global climate change is to let everyone else do it while he jets around the world. He's not worthy to be president but he may make a try for it.

letsbefrank:

Did Al invent global warming, just like he invented the internet?

The sun/earth is in a hot cycle, and yes, man is helping it along. Polar ice caps on mars are melting, never knew the martians had SUV's too! We are all part of the problem and solution! Quit driving so much, maybe there would be less obesity in the US if we WALKED more.

Again I say Al is not a leader, no more then Hilliary and George Bush. Look at Congress now! Their approval rating is less then Bush's. Run on one set of promises, change after you win, endless cycle. Face it folks, were screwed anyway you look at it.

With a few exceptions, this is the most outrageously hilarious set of comments I've yet to see on the WWW, exactly fulfilling Dave Johnson's and James Boyce's prediction.

This site must be high on the list of the lunatic fringe of the right wing.

Keep up the good work!

Arlene Hanson:

Who in their right mind really cares what Al Gore or the Hollywood crazies think??? If this book is like his last one, it's mostly in his mind!!!

George The Connecticut Cokehead:

Ah, Arlene. Time for your owner to put your muzzle back on. Quick to attack Gore while your cokehead preznit literally said that he's chosen by God. You are an example of why the Republican party I joined has become nothing but hypocritical hateful selfish pigs.

PODO:

Great info, thanks a lot!!! I wish I will have such a writing skills.

This is pretty incredible.
You guys called it.
Wow, they are fulfilling your wildest expectations - the Neos just keep giving, Wow.

The subject is R-E-A-S-O-N. ROTFLOL

Just Wow.

Maybe we should switch their channel?
